Lansdowne-Merrick Plantings
This park is now designed to include some ecological restoration as well as intensive passive and active uses (including ball-fields, tennis-courts and play-ground). New plantings of native trees, shrubs and wildflowers represent species in the original landscape before settlement.
The park is near the geological fault that runs through the intersection of Tates Creek Road and New Circle Road, separating the two types of natural landscape in Lexington:
- Inner Bluegrass Plains to west, on relatively pure limestone
- Eden Shale Hills to east, with more shale and siltstone.
Differences between these landscapes in trees, soils and streams can be illustrated at this park, together with the UK Arboretum and other parks (especially Lakeview Park by Henry Clay High School, which has much siltstone).
